Pilot project completed: UAV-based forest inventory in Ireland

SPATIOLAB has completed work on a pilot project focused on a 26.5 ha forest site in Limerick, Southern Ireland. The project was carried out for Silvalytics Limited on the basis of RGB imagery acquired by UAV.

The project included the creation of an orthomosaic and a 3D model, forest type classification, tree counting, tree height assessment, and the detection of windthrown trees. On the basis of these data, SPATIOLAB prepared a set of interactive maps and analytical layers that support a practical assessment of forest conditions.

The results will support forest inventory and the estimation of coniferous and broadleaf timber volume within the study area. This case shows how UAV data can provide efficient and detailed forest analysis for applied environmental tasks.

Interactive 2D and 3D maps from this study are available on the project page.
